Citizenship Test in Tennessee

Preparing for a Nashville or Memphis citizenship test

The Frager Law Firm helps individuals who are applying for U.S. citizenship to prepare for the required citizenship test in Memphis or Nashville.

A foreign citizen or national applying for U.S. citizenship must pass the citizenship test unless qualifications are met for exemption or waiver.  The Tennessee citizenship test is divided into oral and written sections.  The purpose of English sections of the test is to demonstrate the ability to speak, read, and write English.  The test also includes civics questions, which cover fundamental information about U.S. history and government.

The USCIS sends applicants a notice of the appointment time for their test.  Only one notice is sent and one date is scheduled, so it is important to watch for the notice in the mail.

Citizenship interview

A United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) official at your local USCIS field office administers part of your citizenship test through an interview.  The interviewer tests your oral and written abilities in basic English.  To pass the test, you must read one out of three sentences correctly out loud write one out of three sentences correctly for the written portion of the language test.

The civics section of the test consists of answering six out of ten civics questions correctly.  When you are done, the interviewer will evaluate your skills.

You are only given two opportunities to past the test.  If you fail, a new interview date is set during the following 60 to 90 days.  You are re-tested only on the part of the test you failed—the English or civics section.  The new test you take may be the same test or a newer version.
